To maintain a professional and supportive environment, we ask that you:

• Ensure that you have sufficient time to commit to the volunteer role before accepting the position. The minimum commitment is 6 months.

• Complete your assigned hours and tasks as scheduled. Volunteers are capped at 20 hours of (unpaid) service a week.

• Maintain regular communication with your assigned supervisor. Notify your supervisor in advance if you become unavailable, plan to take time off, or delayed in completing a task.

• Demonstrate dependability and reliability in fulfilling responsibilities.

• Complete all required training, including CITI training, prior to beginning activities.

• Volunteers are requested to provide at least one month’s notice of their decision to terminate their involvement to allow for successful offboarding.

• We have the right to terminate the volunteer appointment if we believe the volunteer is not completing tasks within the agreed upon time or not meeting the necessary quality of work.

The IgNITE lab includes faculty investigators, research staff, and various collaborators. As a volunteer, you will work under the supervision of a designated lab member. You are encouraged to ask questions when unsure about a task, participate in invited meetings, and actively engage.

Volunteer opportunities are remote-optional. Volunteers typically work with de-identified clinical data; thus, there are no in-person or patient-facing tasks for volunteers. However, we do encourage volunteers to come in person to the office to network with our lab team members.

Volunteers are expected to commit to at least 6 months of involvement, with a maximum of 20 hours of service per week.

Due to institutional onboarding requirements, it may take up to 3-4 weeks to complete HR onboarding in addition to completing the required training, which in total can take up to 3 months. Volunteers are required to be fully onboarded before working on projects. We appreciate your patience during this process.

Projects vary depending on the lab's needs and your experience. Tasks may include support on data cleaning, data analysis, etc.

No, volunteer roles are unpaid. However, volunteers gain exposure to health services research in a dynamic and collaborative academic and safety-net setting.

No, we accept applicants from outside UCSF, though those with a demonstrated interest in academic research or healthcare are prioritized.

We recognize that many people seek volunteer experience in hopes of requesting a letter of recommendation. Please note that recommendation letters are not guaranteed and if you intend to request a letter of recommendation, please:

• Make the request within a timely manner (1-2 months in advance).

• Actively engage in the lab for a minimum of 6 months.

• Demonstrate consistent and reliable contributions and communication with your supervisor and PI.

• Log on to the CITI site with your current login information.

• From the Courses Page click on the link "Add Institutional Affiliation"

• Type and choose the institution from the search box. Add "University of California, San Francisco" (type out the whole name) as an affiliate organization and then enroll as described here. Confirm you have selected the right institution and agree to the Terms and Conditions. 

• Answer the member information questions required by your newly affiliated institution and enroll in the course(s) [Human Subjects Protection Training] required by your newly affiliated institution.

• You’ll need to complete the Human Subjects Protection and Good Clinical Practice courses.
